The mission of the Ionia County Literacy Council is to increase literacy in Ionia County by recruiting and training volunteer tutors and networking with community and business organizations.
Purpose: Ionia County Literacy Council is organized under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code exclusively for educational purposes, more specifically to train volunteer tutors to work directly with students, both as part of existing literacy programs and independently, and, if appropriate, encourage them to enter a formal program; stimulate public awareness of the problems and scope of illiteracy and the activities of the Ionia County Literacy Council and other area programs to combat said illiteracy; and coordinate the efforts of the Ionia County Literacy Council through student and tutor referrals and information and resource sharing.
Since 1987, the Ionia County Literacy Council has been
-
training volunteer tutors to teach adults how to read and/or improve their reading skills;
-
working closely with the office of Michigan Works to ensure that those job seekers who are deficient in reading and/or math acquire the necessary skills to obtain or retain employment;
-
providing English as a Second Language instruction to those seeking to improve their English skills in order to better communicate with others in their communities;
-
giving one book to every first grader throughout Ionia County and inviting community members to read to first grade classrooms during March is Reading Month; and
- helping inmates improve their reading skills with the Fathers Who Care READ program, so they can record a book on tape for their children and learn valuable communication skills.
