How you can help

When a woman came to the literacy council to see if it was possible for her to learn to read, tears rolled down her cheeks as she explained her situation. She said she felt embarrassed and ashamed that she couldn’t read; that, over the years, her grandchildren have asked her to read to them, and she told them she was too busy, because she didn’t want them to know she couldn’t read. Her goal, at the very least, was to be able to read a simple book to her four-year-old granddaughter.

This scene occurred in the office at the Ionia County Literacy Council. With the help of a volunteer tutor, who taught the woman the phonemic sounds of the letters of the alphabet and how to put those sounds together to form words, she was able to read simple children’s books to her granddaughter in a few short months! She said being able to read to her granddaughter has changed her life. She feels so much better about herself and has so much more self-confidence that, in addition to continuing her reading tutoring, she has decided to receive tutoring to improve her math skills. She has also applied for and been offered a job!

Without the work of the volunteer tutors of the Ionia County Literacy Council, this woman, and others like her who reside in our county, would not receive the help they so desperately need to become self-sufficient, contributing members of our community. It's a win/win situation for all!
